Shoulder pain may arise from the shoulder joint itself or from any of the many surrounding muscles, ligaments or tendons. Shoulder pain that comes from the joint usually worsens with activities or movement of your arm or shoulder.
Shoulder Pain Causes
The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a large range of movement. Such a mobile joint tends to be more susceptible to injury. Shoulder pain can stem from one or more of the following causes:
- Strains from overexertion
- Tendonitis from overuse
- Shoulder joint instability
- Dislocation
- Collar or upper arm bone fractures
- Frozen shoulder
- Pinched nerves
Shoulder Pain Treatment
Shoulder problems are most often first treated with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation):
- Don’t use the shoulder for 48 hours.
- Put an ice pack on the injured area for 20 minutes, four to eight times per day. Use a cold pack, ice bag, or a plastic bag filled with crushed ice wrapped in a towel.
- Put even pressure (compression) on the painful area to help reduce the swelling. A wrap or bandage will help hold the shoulder in place.
- Keep the injured area above the level of the heart. A pillow under the shoulder will help keep it up.
If pain and stiffness persist, see a doctor to diagnose and treat the problem.
